The name Claudio derives from a Roman family name which was derived from Latin claudus meaning "lame, crippled". This was the family name of several Roman emperors of the 1st century, including the emperor known simply as Claudius. He was poisoned by his wife Agrippina in order to bring her son Nero (Claudius's stepson) to power. Joao English form of Iohannes, which was the Latin form of the Greek name Ιωαννης (Ioannes), itself derived from the Hebrew name יוֹחָנָן (Yochanan) meaning "YAHWEH is gracious". Saint Jerome was responsible for the creation of the Vulgate, the Latin translation of the Bible, in the 5th century. Blaise From the Roman name Blasius which meant "lisping" from Latin blaesus. A famous bearer was Blaise Pascal, a mathematician and philosopher from France. Dominik From the Late Latin name Dominicus meaning "of the Lord". This name was traditionally given to a child born on Sunday. Several saints have borne this name, including the 13th-century founder of the Dominican order of friars. Anthony From the Roman family name Antonius, which is of unknown Etruscan origin. It has been commonly (but incorrectly) associated with Greek ανθος (anthos) "flower", which resulted in the addition of the H in the 17th century. A notable bearer of the Roman name was Mark Antony (Marcus Antonius), the general who ruled the Roman Empire jointly with Augustus for a short time. When their relationship turned sour, he and his mistress Cleopatra were attacked and forced to commit suicide. Shakespeare's tragedy 'Antony and Cleopatra' is based on them. Other famous bearers include the 3rd-century Saint Anthony the Abbot, a hermit from Egypt who founded monasticism, and the 13th-century Saint Anthony of Padua, the patron saint of Portugal.
